Personal Statement
I am determined to one day be a primary care physician. I am a juvenile felon that never got past ninth grade despite three attempts at it. I have been run over by a van while operating a moped, breaking nine vertebras in the process, and I had a drug induced seizure from court ordered medications. With every fiber of my being I refuse to give up; failure is not an option!
I remember looking into the mirror in 2006 in complete disbelief and utter disgust. I had the worst case of conjunctivitis I have ever seen and after spending over four hundred bucks at Patient First in an attempt to get well the infection had spread to my eyelid. As I looked in that mirror and stared at my inflamed eyeball covered by my droopy eyelid, I couldn't help but think that in the twenty-first century living in the USA this shouldn't be happening. I felt hopeless as I contemplated spending the rest of my life wearing an eye patch. When I make it in this world I can assure you that I will help poor people in this country get adequate affordable healthcare. I aspire to one day be a doctor of medicine and to be more precise, I aspire to be a primary care physician. I can think of no greater honor than to live my life in service to the poorest amongst us, helping them get adequate affordable healthcare.
I graduated, Summa Cum Laude, from TCC with an associate's degree in Science on 05/10/2010. My GPA at TCC was 3.957. I transferred to ODU and upon intense prayer I was led to pick Biochemistry as my major. I take an almost three hour bus ride to get to ODU every day. I currently have a 3.53 GPA at ODU and I am supposed to graduate from ODU in the spring of 2013. I will be Dr. Thomas James Hierspiel, it's only a matter of time.
